How Do the L1R4 Changes Affect My Child in Secondary School?

Principal Grace was recently interviewed by Channel 8 Frontline, where she discussed the upcoming changes to the L1R4 system, which will affect students applying to Junior College (JC) starting from 2028. The new system will require students to take five O-level subjects instead of six, with their L1R4 score based on one language (L1) and the best four relevant subjects (R4). To qualify for JC, students must score 16 points or fewer in their L1R4 score.

In addition to sharing her insights as an education professional, Principal Grace also offered a personal perspective as a mother of a child who is currently in Secondary School. This unique dual perspective sheds light on how the changes will impact both students and their families.

For students like her son, the shift to the L1R4 system means a more focused academic path, where only the most relevant subjects and the first language are considered for their JC entry qualifications. This change could allow students to concentrate on their strongest subjects, giving them a better chance of qualifying for JC with a score of 16 points or fewer. It also gives families a chance to better plan their child’s secondary school trajectory, knowing exactly what’s needed to meet future JC entry requirements.

Principal Grace’s interview highlights how these changes will reshape the educational landscape for students aspiring to enter JC, making the process less overwhelming while offering a clearer route based on strengths across fewer subjects.

As a parent, how do you feel about the changes?
